Get to Know B97-3's Mary McCann - The Bone Mama

Greetings, Seattle!  I have made my home in Western Washington State since June 2006 but have been a frequent visitor to my family in these parts since I was little. 

I am a writer, performer, inventrix and artist.  My most recent book, “Noisy by Nature”, was published by ASU’s Pyracantha Press. I’m also a performance poet. I’ve been a pioneer in Internet radio since 1999 and that’s where I appear on patents dealing with Internet radio tuning.

I’ve been in broadcast radio since Tesla and I’m mad about the medium and music. On the air, I have been called The Bone Mama since 1982.

What’s with the Bone Mama name?

The Bone Mama handle is something that stuck from early radio days and the funny thing about it is – it’s funny.  I wouldn’t have chosen it for myself but it was a nick-name that happened during some on air bantering about a SoCal band I liked called the Bonedaddys. It stuck and the rest is history. I’m glad my sainted mother did not live to see her only daughter referred to as the Bone Mama.  

What’s Your Favorite Place to Ride Motorcycles?

Hands down, it’s New Zealand.  There are maybe 10 km of straight road in the entire country plus, to up the degree of difficulty, you’re riding on the opposite side of the road.  The people are without guile and the waterfalls without peer.

What’s Your Favorite Spot in Washington?

Mt. Rainier and Hurricane Ridge would have to duke it out.  Rainier is such a charmer and so elusive, then going from the vista of Mt. Olympus down to the ocean in less than an hour at Port Angeles is jaw dropping. I immediately bring visitors there when they come to see me from out of state.

What’s Your Morning Ritual?

I live in the country so it’s up early and TCB.  After the essentials are done I bring the paper in and make some fabulously strong coffee with soy milk and vanilla creamer and do the crossword puzzle and soduku.

Who are Your Favorite Actress and Actor?
Donna Douglas and Johnny Depp top my list.  Do you think they’ll ever swim together in the cement pond?  How about this?  A revival of the swimming movie with Esther Williams brought out of retirement to costar with Depp and Douglas!

Do you Have Any Pets?

I have the most amazing dog in the world, Judy.  She’s pink with black spots then some short, slick, blindingly white fur on top of that, and no undercoat.  She has one blue eye and one brown eye.  When I was looking for my next dog 6 years ago I kept saying my dog will find me.  It took over a year but she found me.
