Get to Know B97-3's Frank Shiers

When's Your Birthday:  March 28th, 1955. The same day Reba McIntire was born.

Hometown:  Born and raised in Bremerton. A proud graduate of West High School, where I fooled my classmates into putting me in student government, played alto saxophone badly, sang in the choir worse, and confirmed my geekiness by competing in debate and forensics.

My Parents:  Were wonderful. My mom was a nurse who stayed home and raised my younger sister, (The World's Most-Perfect Human Being) and me. My dad practiced law in Port Orchard for over 50 years. He was Frank Shiers, Sr. So, you can imagine the confusion created for his clients when I went on the air. They kept asking him how he had time to be a disc jockey!

College:  Got my BA from Washington State University in 1977. The best 7 years of my life. Go Cougs!

In My Other Life:  I corrupted the minds of America's youth. I taught first and fifth grade in North Kitsap and 4 and a half years of high school in South Kitsap. It was great fun. I coached debate and directed a student play each year.

Favorite Board Game:   I love 'Risk.' (Told you I was a geek.) Right now, I'm regularly losing 'Chutes and Ladders,' while playing against my five-year-old daughter.

Favorite Movies:   Gotta be 'The Lord of the Rings' trilogy. A close second: 'Star Wars: Episodes 4, 5, and 6.' (The ones without Jar-Jar Binks... gag.) Oh, and any 'Star Trek' or Pixar movie. All three 'Spider-man' movies rocked, as did the new Batman and Superman flicks.

Favorite TV Shows:  Basically anything with "star" in the title-- 'Star Trek," (any of them) 'Stargate: SG1,' 'Stargate: Atlantis,' plus 'House' and 'Monk.' (I obviously like watching dysfunctional geniuses. See? Geeks rule!

Hobbies:   I'm a self-syndicated editorial cartoonist. My cartoons run in about 15 newspapers, from the San Juans to Olympia and all over King County. I'm also a huge movie buff. Don't miss many of the big new pictures. I spend my winter skiing up in the Cascades. Crystal Mountain and Whistler/Blackcomb are mountains of choice. I love to read (fiction, mostly) and travel, too.

Someone I'd Most Like to Meet:   Rudy Guiliani would be very cool. I'd like to spend an afternoon with Rush Limbaugh. Any of the producers, writers or main actors from the 'Stargate' television shows would certainly rock.

Should'a, Would'a, Could'a:  Would have loved to go up on the space shuttle. I'll settle for seeing a launch in-person some day.

Favorite Thing About B97-3:   Playing the music that I grew up with. There's nothing as much fun as kicking off Steve Miller's 'Jet Airliner' or Grand Funk's 'We're an American Band.'

First Album Ever Owned:   That would be one of those vinyl thingies. Let's see. The one with the most dust would be 'Days of Future Passed' from The Moody Blues.

Favorite Song:   Sentimental favorite: Harry Chapin's 'Cat's in the Cradle.' I saw him sing the song live, unplugged, in the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis my freshman year of college.

Favorite Artists:  You mean I have to pick? All right, how about Billy Joel, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Supertramp, The Steve Miller Band, Chicago, The Doobie Brothers.

People Would Be Shocked To Know:   That I'm mildly afraid of the dark. Actually, I'm fine as long as I have someone around to protect me, like our 9 year-old yellow lab; or my daughter, Sarah May, the kindergartner; or my lovely wife, Janell. Our 13-year-old orange cat is as big a coward as I am, so he's no help at all.
