Together, these diseases claim more lives than any other in Washington. The AHA works to keep adults and children healthy through a variety of programs, services and fundraising events. A major goal of the American Heart Association is to reduce coronary heart disease, stroke and risk by 25 percent in 2010. The American Heart Association is a volunteer-driven organization and relies on the work of volunteers to carry out its mission. Volunteers help out with events, serve in committees and perform many other functions. Currently the American Heart Association is promoting healthier living through programs such as Start!, Go Red for Women, Power to End Stroke and the Alliance for a Healthier Generation. Its biggest events include the Start! Heart Walk, the Heart Ball and the Go Red for Women Luncheon. These events focus on educating the community and raising money to support research, advocacy, public awareness and professional education.
